(Excerpt from book:)
Matt had almost forgotten about Emma Gagnon’s death, but recalled it instantly when he heard the almost frantic tone in his mother’s voice, echoing in the nearly bare kitchen.
“Broke into her office? But… why would anyone do that?”
Matt immediately slowed down to listen. A burglary was interesting, provided it did not happen to him and his things. He came to the doorway of the kitchen. His mother was sitting at the counter, her lap-top open, a pile of manuscript pages next to it. She was hunched forward, a physical signal that she was totally engrossed in what she was hearing on the other side of the line and that she was worried by it.
Was she talking to Jonathan?
As he sidled into the kitchen towards the fridge, she began speaking again.
“They think she was what…? Oh my God…”
She was not talking to Jonathan, that Matt was fairly certain of, and she still had not noticed Matt’s entrance. Her hands were moving now, she was trying to make sense of something. He reached up slowly for the door handle.
“But how was she…?”
The fridge handle clicked. Samantha broke off and turned sharply, spotting Matt for the first time. Her mouth opened into a little O and she looked horrified. Matt dropped his gaze, grabbed a bottle, and shut the door. If he slipped out quickly enough, maybe she would continue the conversation. He could listen in from the den…
No such luck. He was not even out of the room when she spoke quickly into the phone, “Look, can we talk? I can be there in a few minutes?”
Definitely not Jonathan, then. But if not him, who?
He did not get a chance to find out. Samantha ended the call in a hurry, packed her things and sprinted out of the house without another word. Matt stood at the den window. He watched his mother pull out of the driveway with aggravated haste and wondered what it was that could have upset her so much.

Chris Dovidio has worked with Narrow Street Films since he was a child, working with them in such projects as the Artists and Idiots webseries and Not That Guy. Talented both in front and behind the camera, he's become an essential part of the NSF team.
