“Colin,” she whispered again. “I need your help…”
Colin’s surprise quickly turned to anger. He stepped towards her, his hands tensing. “Have you got it?”
She flinched as though he had hit her. She made the smallest of head moves, No.
Colin swore and turned away from her, swinging his fists. She stepped as though to follow him, stopping short when he turned on her again.
“You stupid girl!” he hissed. He could not risk shouting it, but he might as well have for the reaction he got. “Do you realize what you’ve done?”
“Colin-”
“The police are all over now!”
Her eyes were huge, pathetic. “I know, I know, I’m so scared - Colin, if you knew-”
He stepped forward and she stepped back. “I don’t give a crap,” he snarled. “Tell me you at least found it. Tell me that.”
She hesitated… then shook her head.
In the blinding cascade of fear and frustration, Colin barely heard her attempt at an explanation. He did not even try to listen. All he really heard was her cry of pain the first time he hit her...
