It’s February in New England, the height of the snow season, and this year, we’ve been getting hammered. Snow piles are taller than trucks in parking lots, snow is nearly waist-high in some backyards, and the roads seem permanently dusted. All across the great state of New Hampshire, skiers are rejoicing, plowmen are racking up work hours, and homeowners are bemoaning their backs, thrown out from shoveling out their cars. Snow is a popular subject for discussion and complaining, and as the weather people report future storms, visions of Florida come more quickly and seem more enticing.
But as for myself, a non-skier and a renter, I rather like snow season and it’s a good thing, too: If you want to live in New England, you have to get used to it. So in defense of snow, here are seven reasons to love the white stuff.
1. Snow Days
I’m a hard worker who really does like her job. But still, having a legit excuse to stay home, inside all day with a hot cup of tea, a warm blanket, and a long book? Priceless.
Bonus: Snow and ice are great excuses to get out of social obligations as well.
Take a bowl outside. Fill it with snow. Add either vanilla and sugar or flavored syrup, mix, serve, and enjoy. Snow. It’s the next best thing to ice cream.
3. Lawn care – or lack thereof
Miss a week of mowing and weeding in the summer and your neighbors start pointedly talking about neglect and falling property values. Have a front yard is a constant concern and hassle – until snow falls and suddenly everything looks effortlessly pristine.
4. All Natural Refrigeration
Having a party and don’t have enough space in your fridge for all the extra wine and beer? In winter, you never have to worry about it going back. Just stash it on your snow-covered back porch.
In the summer, your backyard hills are for mowing and biking. In the winter, covered in snow and ice, they’re your own private theme park ride, minus the long lines and steep entrance prices.
6. Ice Skating and Ice
In the summer, you can have a picnic by the lake. In the winter, you have it on the lake. Boom.
Bonus: Snow drifts make great comfy seats.
Because let's be honest: who doesn’t love a snowman?
So there you have it - Seven perfectly good reasons to love the snow and winter season. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go and shovel my way to Florida before cabin fever settles in.
